INTRODUCTION'

I n a recent publication(9) I have described the chemical sensitivity of the legs of the blowfly, Calliphora vomitoria Linn., to a number of common sugars. It is highly desirable for purposes of comparison that similar data be available for the mouth parts of this insect. It is the purpose of this paper to present such data.

GENERAL METHODS

The general technique employed in these experiments was the same as that described for my experiments on the legs of Calliphora (locxit.), where a detailed account of methods may be found. With the exception of six of the animals used for the determination of the saccharose threshold (table 5, series 3a), only freshly hatched flies were used. In the exception noted, the animals were fifteen to sixteen days old and had been kept on a diet of 1M saccharose solution. In the case of freshly hatched flies, the animals used in a single 'This work waa carried out while the author wm a Fellow of the John Simon Guggenbeim Memorial Foundation, 1928Foundation, -1929. . 'It is a pleasure here to thank Prof. Karl v. Frisch, Director of the Zoiilogical Institute in Munich, for the cordial hospitality accorded me in his laboratory, where theae experiments were carried out.

The microtopology of the motoneurons involved in protraction and retraction of the proboscis of the blowfly (Calliphora vicina) has been studied. In addition, taste input from the labellar hairs was investigated. As a result of this study it appears that protraction movements are controlled by two w
