Abstract

The paper reviews the major developments published in the Patent literature over the last thirty years insofar as these reflect the evolution of the so‐called anaerobic and cyanoacrylate adhesives and the recent introduction of the ‘toughened’ acrylic adhesives.

Reaction mechanisms are postulated and the problems of formulation and production discussed in detail together with the performance characteristics of the individual adhesive types.
