✦ Synopsis

The S1 + S, absorption spectrum of 3,3'-bipyrenyl in a fluid solution 1s compared with the absorption spectrum of the excimer of pyrene. A qualitative dcscrigtion is given which can apply for the similarities existing between the excited-state absorption spectra of excimers and doubIe moiecules in a fluid solution.

The absorption spectrum of the pyrene excimer in a single crystal has been measured. The spectrum is similar to that obtained in solution. The polarization of the absorption peaks in the crystal was found to be similar to that of the excimer fluorescence emission. The overlap between the excimeric e
