Dichotomous constructions of human society are as old as the social sciences. In t h i s characterisation of societal types the two worlds have been viewed as systems with distinctive and often contradistinctive elements. Redfield's was the f3st systematic and conscious attempt to unfold the inadequacy of the notion of dichotomy, calling attention to the fact that societies can be arranged based on their increasing or decreasing complexity and varying structural levels. This is a leap forward in the perception of societal types, for it postulates the two types as remaining at the polar points with the possibility of gradual differentiation from one point to another. Notwithstanding the advance registered by the formulation of the continuum hypothesis several criticisms have been levelled against it. This articleis anattempt
