Soon after taking a room in a suburban house young Mathew Tark notices that Mrs. Shawburn, the old woman next door, is spying on him. He tries to dismiss her intrusions into his privacy as an eccentricity. As the assault on his nerves continues, however, he reaches an inevitable conclusion: the old woman is desperately, perhaps dangerously, in love with him.
This spying game assumes a more sinister aspect when Albert, Mrs. Shawburnβs husband, mysteriously disappears. Mathew, knowing that she is a little mad, feels for once in his life that he must act positively; his responsibility towards the old man, whom nobody else will miss, is only too clearβ¦.
