✦ Synopsis
The fluorescence spectrum of 4-diethylaminobenzonitrile (DEABN) is compared with that of 4-dimethylaminobenzonitrile (DMABN) in u-cyclodextrin (CD) aqueous solution. The absence of the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) fluorescence band around 460 nm in the case of DEABN and its presence in the case of DhL4BN is attributed to the role of the a-CD cavity size on the TICT phenomenon. The diethylamino group is bigger than the dimethylamino group and most probably is interlocked in the hydrophobic environment and, therefore, unable to rotate during the excited state lifetimes. This is supported by the fluorescence decay results.
