Information science may be defined as "the science which investigates the properties and behaviour of information, the forces governing the flow of information, and the means of processing information for optimum accessibility and usability".

This paper presents an analysis of what constitutes an information system; considers the relationship between information science and ccmputer science and discusses the current status of information retrieval, and its role in total information systems.
