โฆ Synopsis
The separated roles of phosphorus and bromine in fire retardancy of polyesters have been investigated under purely pyrolytic conditions. Complete mass balances of pyrolysis products show that a retardant (neo pentyl glycol polyphenyl phosphonate) containing only phosphorus promotes char formation and increases the aromaticity in the residue. If only bromine is contained (dibromo neopentyl glycol ployterephthalate) less char is formed and the residue is less aromatic. Bromine is released in the gas-phase simultaneously with the other gaseous species. Retardation results from the combined effect of phosphorus in the solid and bromine on the gas-phase reactions.
