✦ Synopsis

Both field observations and subsequent laboratory experiments showed that the presence of free Ca(OH)~ is a necessary condition for the breakdown of a PortlaHd cement concrete structure due to the destructive alkali-silica reaction. The complete removal of free Ca(OH) 2 either by leaching with a concentrated solution of CaCI 2 or by reacting with a pozzolana suppresses alkali-sillca reaction even when excess alkali metal salt ,including hydroxide ,is present in the structure.Attention has been drawn to certain practical implications of the above results.
