Abstract

Using formulae derived by dimensional analysis from experiments on thermals in still surroundings, a theory is built up which predicts the motion of a thermal rising in various wind shears. A criterion to give the limits of applicability of the theory is put forward. Finally, the theory is applied to calculating the coefficients of heat and momentum transfer, where transfer is due solely to the rise of thermals.
