β¦ Synopsis
This essay examines a persuasive message in a popular journal in order to discover the basis of its rhetorical effectiveness. Logical analysis reveals an apparently simple argument, and standard rhetorical precepts help to explain the role of such features as narrative structure and ethical appeal. Close textual analysis is required, however, to account for the ultimate sources of rhetorical artistry. For that purpose, Leff's exemplary studies of time and space in rhetorical texts are adopted as a paradigm for rhetorical analysis. The study confirms Leff's hypothesis: through management of time and space within the text, a skillful rhetor reconstructs an audience's perception of time and space with respect to problems in the public sphere.
