โฆ Synopsis
The response of a flexible cylinder as a function of the ratio of its natural frequency to the wave frequency has been investigated over a range of Keulegan-Carpenter numbers, showing that the peak response in the transverse direction occurs at a ratio of about 2 and that this response is not influenced by motion in the in-line direction. The maximum in-line response occurs at a frequency ratio of approximately 1 , but in this case it is influenced by motion in the transverse direction. A method to predict the maximum amplitude of oscillation of the cylinder was reasonably successful. This method requires a knowledge of the forces or moments on a fixed cylinder and the structural characteristics of the flexible cylinder.
