Abstract
A harmonic analysis is made of the annual temperature variation at 42 stations spread over central and northern Europe, using in each case 5‐day mean temperatures averaged over a considerable number of years. It is found that the first two harmonics account for nearly all the annual variance, the residual variance being usually less than 0.4 per cent of the total. Most of this residual variance seems to be random in origin, but a small part may be due to systematic departures from the two‐term harmonic form.
