Abstract

Midโ€dorsal protective hairโ€shafts from fortyโ€five species of Soricidae were studied with the object of investigating the relation between the differences in certain microscopic structural elements and the diameters of the shafts in which they were developed, and the possible occurrence of specific characters in these elements. In comparing like portions of like hairโ€shafts, it was found that scaleโ€ and medullaโ€forms were related (with slight variations within their formโ€groups) to the diameters of the hairโ€shafts in which they were developed. It is possible that further study of these slight variations may show them to be associated with the species bearing the hair.

An examination of the cuticular scales of the lynx spiders Oxyopes aglossus, O. salticus, and Peucetia viridans using scanning electron microscopy revealed that scales in these spiders are morphologically distinct, yet similar to the scales of the jumping spiders Eris militaris and Hentzia mitrata.

The differentiation of the cuticular plate and stereocilia in cochleovestibular hair cells from the mouse was traced with monoclonal antibodies raised by in vitro immunization. The cuticular plate is detected first from embryonic days 14-15 (E14-E15), before cell differentiation is apparent, either
