✦ Synopsis

Abstract

The pyrolysis of methyl isatins is described. Examination of the toluidines formed by elimination of 2 CO followed by H‐abstraction indicates that 1__H__‐benzazirines (12) are inter‐mediates. The interconversion of 1__H__‐ and 1a__H__‐benzazirine (15) is not detectable. 1‐Phenyl‐benzotriazole does not give a benzazirine intermediate.
