Abstract

An expression is derived for the intensity‐ratio for two wavelengths in the ultra‐violet of primary scattered sunlight received from the zenith at the base of a plane‐stratified atmosphere. The logarithm of the intensity‐ratio is expanded in a series which reveals the nature of the relation between it and the vertical distribution of atmospheric ozone. The information on the vertical distribution given by zenith observations when the sun is high in the sky is discussed.

## Abstract The results of a limited series of ozone‐sonde ascents made at Christchurch, New Zealand (latitude 43.5°S) during 1965‐66 with Brewer‐Mast electro‐chemical sondes are discussed. It is found that the vertical distribution of ozone and the pattern of its seasonal variation is similar to t
