The behaviour of liquids in fine cracks is examined theoretically and the resulting effect on the mechanical properties of the material containing the cracks is estimated.

It is found that a significant effect could exist for materials having a low flow stress ( -0.1 kg/mm%) but no effect is likely for hard materials.
