SULPHIDE FORMATION IN THE REACTION OF SULPHUR WITH POLYISOPRENES

PART vr. FACTORS INFLUENCING CYCLIC

By GEORGE F. BLOOMNELD

Cyclic sulphidcs arc to a large extent secondary products of the reamon of primarily-formcd intermolecular polysulphides with polyisoprene hydrocarbon, and undue prolongation of the time of reaction of sulphur with polyisoprcnes favours cyclic sulphide formation and so reduces the cross-linking efficiency of the sulphur. Various accclcrating substances markedly increase thc cross-linking efficiency either by permitting shorter reaction times to be employed, ting 3 cross-linking nthcr than a cyclizing reaction of the ~~~~~. o ~h i u n m disulphide accelerators in the absence of sulphur bring about cross-1 ng, the linkages being of C-S-C type rather than C -C . 9

The lead tetraacetate (LTA) oxidation of saturated alcohols in non-polar solvents affords usually as major products unsubstituted tetrahydrofuran-type ethers, the formation of which involves intramolecular 1,5-hydrogen abstraction by the initially produced alkoxy radicals, followed by internal attac
