✦ Synopsis


Billingsley and Ranson ('18) counted the myelinated nerve fibers in the cervical sympathetic trunk and related their number to the number of cells in the superior cervical ganglion. The resulting ratio of preganglionic fibers to postganglionic cells was approximately one to thirty-two. This observation suggested the possibility that one preganglionic fiber supplies impulses to thirty-two, or more, postganglionic cells.
