✦ Synopsis
This paper, an extension of an earlier work (I), deals with a long cylindrical bar (of homogeneous, isotropic, and linearly elastic material) that is initially in static equilibrium under the action of uniform radial pressure on its cylindrical surface and axial stress as required to maintain plane strain. In (I), the radial pressure was assumed to be suddenly removed at zero time, with plane-strain conditions being maintained thereafter. In this paper, initial conditions are the same, but the radial pressure is removed gradually and uniform.ly over a certain time interval (ramp unloading). Equations for the radial displacement and for the radial, circumferential, and axial stresses due to ramp unloading are derived from the sudden unloading solution by superposition. T*ariations of these quantities with the radial coordinate and time are shown graphically for Poisson's ratio equal to 0.3 and one rate of unloading.
