✦ Synopsis

It is shown that if A is a unital C*-algebra then Z(A), the centre of A, is a proximinal subspace. In other words, for each a # A there exists z # Z(A) such that &a&z& is equal to the distance from a to Z(A).

This paper arose out of an attempt to generalize the q q -1 -basis for the centre of an Iwahori-Hecke algebra q found by Jones to q q -1 and to other types. Considering the Iwahori-Hecke algebra over a subring ΞΎ of q 1/2 q -1/2 , where ΞΎ = q 1/2q -1/2 , we use a new and natural definition of positiv

Let A be a finite-dimensional hereditary algebra over a finite field, and let Ž . Ž . H H A and C C A be, respectively, the Ringel᎐Hall algebra and the composition w x Ž . w x algebra of A. Define r to be the element Ý M g H H A , where M runs over d the isomorphism classes of the regular A-modules
