✦ Synopsis

ABSIRACT

Sodium silicate sea water Portland cement grouts at high water/cement ratios (between 2 and 3) have been used for a number of years for void filling in the foundations of offshore concrete gravity platforms. Some of the initial development work on the grouts is briefly reviewed, and the results of an investigation into their long term properties are presented.

It is shown that the grouts obey similar strength vs water/cement ratio laws to conventional structural grouts and concretes, but that unconfined swelling may lead to some long term degradation. An examination of the swelling mechanism may be of use in the study of alkalisilica reaction in concrete.

The effect of a melamine sulfonate resin, anaphthalene sulfonate resin and a sulfonated lignin on the rheological properties and the hydration of portland cement and tricalcium silicate pastes was studied. In addition to improving the flow properties of the pastes all three substances retarded the h
