โœฆ Synopsis

Walk-in clinics in retail spaces, such as supermarkets, are popping up nationwide at a fast pace. Their emergence has been triggered by consumers' demands for convenience and affordable health care. New market opportunities are being seized by clinic owners who range from business entrepreneurs with, or without health care expertise, to health care organizations. Clinics are typically manned by nurse practitioners and physicians are not generally on site. Risks are dependent upon the scope of services offered, staff responsibilities and qualifications, the formation and implementation of clinical and administrative guidelines and the degree to which there is compliance with them. Risk management professionals need to be attuned to the characteristics and proliferation of the retail clinics, as they are likely to be impacted by them, whether directly, through ownership or affiliation, or indirectly, through patient referrals or transfers from them.
