An attempt to explain SNOBOL 3 within the confines of a short article would try the patience of even the most earnest reader. For the purpose at hand, therefore, it seems wiser to set a more modest goal: a description of some of the attributes and capabilities of the computer language SNOBOL3 that may be of interest to the scholar in one of the humanistic disciplines. This brief introduction should enable him to decide whether or not he wishes to learn the language. Reference materials for that purpose are listed at the end of the article.
