✦ Synopsis

Preliminary experiments have shown that liquid coal-based feedstocks can be processed in a submerged arc reactor to give a gas containing up to 35% v/v acetylene at an energy consumption estimated to be approximately 7 kW h/kg of acetylene. Similar experiments using phenanthrene and liquid paraffin indicate that the conversion of carbon to acetylene cannot be greater than 24% for the aromatic feedstocks, including coal-based feedstocks, nor greater than 60% for the aliphatic feedstocks.
