✦ Synopsis

The Problems of Oral Contraceptives in Dope Control of Anabolic Steroids. Dope control of anabolic steroids is based on the detection of their metabolites in urine samples. The Medical Commissian of the International Commi ttee has recommended a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) procedure for screening and conformation of the respective metabolites. The methodology as developed by Donike and coworkers (1) has proven its usefulness.

Clausnitzer of the IOC accredited laboratory in the GDR (Kreisha) reported the Medical Commission of the IOC that the oral contraceptive norethisterone is transformed in the body for a small amount into 19-norandrosterone, the main metabolite of the anabolic steroid 19-nortestosterone ( 2 ) . This creates a serious problem, because due to that phenomenon it is not possible to indicate the origin of 19-norandrosterone.

Recently published papers have shown a slightly increased risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE) among users of third generation oral contraceptive pills (OC) as compared with users of second generation OC. The extra risk is small (about twofold) and could be explained possibly by biases introduced i
