✦ Synopsis

Regional chemotherapy for head and neck cancer has been in sporadic use for at least three decades. Obstacles to its more enthusiastic acceptance and use have included technical problems and complications with long-term indwelling catheters and drug delivery, and, most important, the lack of drugs that seem to be more effective when delivered locally. This is in part a reflection of the general lack of response by squamous cell cancer of the head and neck to chemotherapeutic agents. In addition, studies of head and neck cancer treatment have been hindered by the lack of large controlled studies with adequate treatment alternatives. O u r ability to deliver substances locally to many head and neck tumors makes it essential to keep abreast of developments that might suddenly permit the more effective local treatment of head and neck cancer. The excellent review and summary by Dr. Baker in the NovembedDecember issue and concluding in this issue ("Intraarterial Infusion Chemotherapy for Head and Neck Cancer,'' Parts 1 and 2) aids us greatly in accomplishing this goal.
