โฆ Synopsis
FOUR FIGURES
Recent studies of the action of hydrostatic pressure upon the contraction process in muscle indicate that muscular 'viscosity' is an important factor in determining the pressure effect. It becomes of interest, therefore, to ascertain directly the order of magnitude of these viscous changes in certain relatively less complex marine eggs. Accordingly, a pressure chamber was constructed which permits of viscosity measnrements by the 'centrifuge method' at high hydrostatic pressures. I n the present study the pressure coefficient of 'viscosity,' that is, the change in viscosity, per unit viscosity at atmospheric pressure, per atmosphere, is determined in Arbacia eggs by employing the sedimentation time of the chromatophores as an index of viscosity.
