โฆ Synopsis
He studied ophthalmology under Albrecht von Graefe. He became 'Ausserordentlicher Professor' of ophthalmology at the University of Berlin in 1879, and honorary professor in 1890. He introduced the use of a strong electromagnet for removing magnetic foreign bodies from the eye. He founded the Zentralblatt fiir Augenheilkunde in 1877, and looked after it for 43 years [1].
What made Hirschberg world famous were his library and his contribution to the history of ophthalmology in Graefe Saemisch's Handbuch der gesamrnten Augenheilkunde, published in 9 volumes in 1899-1918. His 'opus magnum' on the history of ophthalmology in Graefe Saemisch's Handbuch was recently translated into English by Dr. Blodi.* Some time ago a discussion started, how to extend Hirschberg's History of Ophthalmology to include the 20th century. As the amount of publications increases exponentially with time, this will be really a tough job.
Some years ago, we published an article on the Hirschberg Library [2]. Recently, Dr. Blodi asked me about the present status of the Library. It is located in the Central Library of the University of Tokyo. I went there to see whether the Hirschberg Library was still in good condition.
