The last major study of rheumatology manpower was completed in 1980 as part of an effort by the Graduate Medical Education National Advisory Committee (GMENAC) to estimate medical care requirements and physician supply for all medical and surgical specialties (1). The GMENAC study concluded that there would be 3,000 rheumatologists by 1990 while approximately 1,900 would be needed to meet the estimated requirements for rheumatologic care, suggesting that there would be a substantial surplus of rheumatologists in 1990.
