We had some difficulty in the measurements of the heat capacity. The thermometer was placed in the centre of the sample and the heater on the outside; the thermal resistance of the sample therefore caused a considerable time lag between the heat pulse and the increase in temperature of the thermometer. On the other hand this time lag allowed us to estimate the thermal conductivity of the sample at lower temperatures. At 4 K we found a thermal conductivity ~ = 4 x 10 "a J s "1 m "~ K "1 , and at 10 KX = 20 x 10 "a J s "1 m "l K "l . At 4 K this is in agreement with the maufacturer's specification. 1 McTaggart and Slack 6 found an average vlue ofA = 60x 10 -3 J s "l m "l K "1 in this temperature region. They used, however, a baked sample, and little is known about the difference in the properties of baked and air dried material.
