## Abstract ## BACKGROUND: Hospitalized patients who develop severe sepsis have significant morbidity and mortality. Early goal‐directed therapy has been shown to decrease mortality in severe sepsis and septic shock, though a delay in recognizing impending sepsis often precludes this intervention.
