## Rate coefficients for electronic energy transfer from N2A 3xi to Hg and NO were recorded as 2.90 (50.15) x 10-10 and 5.45 (\*Cl.30 X lo-11 cm3 set-l molecule-l respectively. Excitation of the molecular nitrogen was achieved by monochromatic flash-photosensitization with the resonance radiation

✦ Synopsis
This paper analyses the conditions necessary for partial electronic state population inversion in diatomics caused by electronic energy transfer from NI(A'Z: ). It is shown that the light gain can exceed 10m4 cm-' in highly diluted gas mixtures under atmospheric pressure at N2( A) concentrations close to 10'. cmp3.
