✦ Synopsis

Muoxyalkyl radicals (R,C'-0-MU)

were observed by transverse-field muon spin rotation (TF-pSR) spectroscopy during irradiation of liquid compounds containing different carbonyl functions (aldehyde, ketone, ester, amide, anhydride) with spin-polarized positive muons. These radicals may be viewed as formal adducts of the light hydrogen isotope muonium (p+e-) arising from its addition to the oxygen atom of the C=O bond: C'-%Mu. Comparison is made with the related protium analogues, C'-0-H.
