✦ Synopsis

The macropore-filling model is used to'evaluate the deactivation characteristics for macroporous catalyst systems. Three different types of fooling mechanisms are considered: (I) inactive fouling-fouling involving only physical deposition on the catalyst; (2) active fouling-fouling in which new active sites are created by the deposit; and (3) hard-shell fouling-active fouling in which reaction is limited to the surface of the deposit only. For each of the fouling mechanisms, the model gives a simple analytical expression for average peliet activity. These expressions utilize Thiele-type parameters, with no more than three parameters appearing in any one mechanism. The model is verified by comparison to published experimental data. Activity vs foulant weight data are compared to model predictions for both inactive and active fouling. In addition, predicted reactor time-temperature profiles are compared with experimental data for the active fouling case. lNTRODUCTlON
