✦ Synopsis

The polymerization of methacrylamide initiated by the redox system potassium persulphate/2-mercaptoethanol has been studied. The order of the reaction with respect t o methacrylamide was found to be one with deviation a t higher concentration of the monomer. A t optimum concentration of potassium persulphate and 2-mercaptoethanol the order of the polymerization reaction is 0.5 with respect to both persulphate and 2-mercaptoethanol. The effect of the polymerization conditions on the intrinsic viscosities and the influence of additives on the rate of polymerization were investigated.

The kinetics of aqueous polymerization of acrylamide (AM) and methacrylamide (MAM) have been studied using a potassium peroxydiphosphate (PDP/Mn(II) system in an inert atmosphere at 40Β‘C and at constant pH (1Γ‰30). The polymerization rate has been found to be proportional to the half power R p of PDP
