✦ Synopsis
Membrane separation processes (e.g., RO) purify water by separating the feed solution into two streams: product water and waste (concentrate) stream.
The increase in calcium and alkalinity concentration in the waste stream may cause scale formation. Therefore, when a solution of high scaling potential is purified, precautions need to be taken. For RO, most solutions involve chemical additions (antiscalent additives, pH adjustment, softening).
In electrodeionization, it is possible to minimize the scale problem in a variety of new ways, without addition of chemicals. Several approaches to scale control have been discussed. Publication plans unknown.
