✦ Synopsis

The fluorescence decay and fluorescence spectra of S-methosytryptophan in water have been recorded as a function of PH. The fluorescence $ectrum undergoes a pronounced red-shift as the pH is increased. Thisbehaviour is ascribed to deprotonation of the alanyl amino group. This is the frost direct evidence for an effect of the nature of the substituents on the alanyl chain on the energy of the emitting state in indole. The relevance of these results to indole esciplex formation and the non-exponential fluorescence decay of tryptophan is discussed.
