โœฆ Synopsis

It has been shown that two N-methylstyrylpyridinium salts weakly associate in aqueous solution, When styryipyridinium groups are attached to poly(vinyl alcohol) as pendant groups, the association is much more marked and its efficiency is greater for the 4-styrylpyridiv~um salt than for the 2-styrylpyridinium salt. From fluorescence measurements, it is concluded that the cycloaddition reactions occur via the associated pendant groups.

A simple model has been devised to predict the number of chromophores which are photoreactive in polymers which contain groups that undergo [2 + 2] photocycloaddition reactions. The model utilises typical molecular dimensions and considers the possible permutations of photosensitive groups in specif
