Although the direct introduction of carboxyl groups, such as chloroformyl, alkoxycarbonyl, and carbemoyl groups, into paraffins and olefins by means of radical reactions has been received attention recently (1 -6), no attempts to introduce two carboxyl groups into the 1,2-positions of an olefin have
