Recently Adam and Schreiber (l), on attempting to apply the Hofmann-L8ffler reaction (2) to the N-chloro compound I, diecovered a new type of fragmentation, the main products obtained on UV irradiation being the 20(R) and 20(S)-chloro-5a-pregnane-3!3-ol (II). We have now shown that this same type of fragmentation occur8 on the W Irradiation of N-chloro-No.40 L C"3 CH, c 53 Ix CH3 t CH2CH2CH3 Cl-CH2CH2.CH3
