Although the periodic or penetration descriptions of the turbulent boundary layer oversimplify this phenomenon by treating a complex statistical process in terms of some mean period, such models often lead to simple, accurate analytical relationships for evaluation of the important transport processes. A principal defect of these descriptions is the poor agreement observed between experiment and prediction for the case of heat or mass transfer with high Prandtl or Schmidt numbers.
