T~: PATTERX MAKER'S ASSISTA_N-T. By Joshua Rose, M.E. :New York: D. Van Nostrand, 1878. 12mo, pp. 324. The title of this work is not couibrmable to its pref~ace, which sets ibrth that it is intended "to be usefhl to apprentice pattern makers and also to practical nmchiulsts." All examination of the book is not satisfactory to est',blish that it will fill either requisite. In no one regard is it thorough. The calling of a pattern maker calmot be set il,rth with the fulness which the :Tprentice or machinist requires in the small book now offhred, while the tables and data which a competent pattern nmker requires ibr reference are much more extensive than are here given. The common handbooks for the mechanic will be ii~und to contain more full general tables, while the particular ones given are Sar from convenient for. a pattern maker's use. With nmeh novel infbrmation in the practice of the pattern room and foundry, there is so much not said, that the work is not a safe instructor to the novice and of little use to the skilled mechanic.
