✦ Synopsis

I n a previous paper (Tang, '31) the oxygen tension-oxygen consumption curve for unfertilized arbacia eggs was determined. The data were analyzed in terms of equations relating oxygen consumption to diffusion in a single cell (Gerard, '31). The critical oxygen tension, C,, necessary to just insure maximum respiration of the unfertilized eggs mas found to be about one hundred times the value calculated, assuming the diffusion coefficient determined by Krogh ( '19) for fascia. Also, the shape of the curve of falling respiration with diminishing oxygen tension below the critical value was not exactly that to be expected if inadequate diffusion into the cell were the only factor. It seemed especially desirable, therefore, to obtain an equivalent set of data on the fertilized eggs. The only work avaiIable on these is that of Amberson ( '28), performed with a different method and not including all the quantitative factors necessary to complete the treatment.
