โœฆ Synopsis

The results of oxidative coupling of methane in the presence and absence of catalyst have been compared under the same or similar reaction conditions. The reaction in the presence of catalyst proceeded in steady state, but that in the absence of catalyst showed an induction period. The rate of the latter reaction was accelerated remarkably with the residence time.

Only the former reaction could be expressed by a simple rate equation.

High Q-yield was not obtained in the absence of catalyst ((7.5%). but the Q-yield greater than 25% was attained in the presence of catalyst.

The role of catalyst was suggested to enhance not only the generation of CH3. radicals but also their coupling on the surface of catalyst.

## Abstract Wโ€Mn/SiO~2~ catalyst has been developed in our laboratory (LICP), which is active, selective and stable for oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) in fixed bed and fluidized bed reactors. The research results have been reproduced at different reaction conditions by two groups of J. H. Luns
