Abundance of phosphorus (P) in martian rocks might be crucial in the formation of iron oxides, hematite (Ξ±-Fe 2 O 3 ) and maghemite (Ξ³ -Fe 2 O 3 ), thought to occur in martian soils. This hypothesis is supported by laboratory experiments showing that the thermal transformation of P-doped lepidocroci
