A determination of the coiitribution made by tlic grannlosa and theca iiiteriia in the formation of the corpus Inieum is difficnlt, largely because the changes occur with great rapidity and uniformity, and because the basement membrane of the granulosa, ~h i c h is between these tissues, early disappears. While this is trnc even when carefully timed specimens are available from animals having a long cycle, it is especially truc in animals with a short cycle, such as the rat and the mouse.2 I n the mature rat, however, following the daily t,ransplaiitation of the fresh anterior pituitary, thc conditions are somewhat different. As has been shown (Smith, '26, and Smith and Engle, ,271, these transplants induce a cystic condition of the follicles (fig. l).;
