✦ Synopsis

pletely re-typeset and with a new foreword by Oliver Sacks. The Organism has a distinguished publishing history, having first been published in German in 1934, and then in English translation in 1939, followed by a paperback edition in 1963. Karl Lashley contributed the foreword to the first English edition and Goldstein wrote a new preface for the paperback edition.

In 1933 Goldstein was forced out of his professional and academic positions in Berlin by the Nazis. After being jailed briefly, he was forced to leave Germany and seek asylum in Amsterdam. The Rockefeller Foundation supported him for a year and it was during this time that Goldstein dictated the book to his secretary over the course of five or six weeks.
