โœฆ Synopsis

The capture and recognition of late medieval music through optical scanning is an aid to research and an exercise in image processing that makes us consider historical issues in the notation of chant. The recognition of pitches is accomplished through the location and elimination of the staff lines and a process of pattern recognition. In effect this follows the chronology of notation in reverse order, converting square notation into cheironomic neumes.
