โฆ Synopsis
THE OCCURRENCE OF VANADIUM, CHRO-MIUM, AND OTHER UNUSUAL ELEMENTS IN CERTAIN COALS By F. hl. REYNOLDS It has been found that the ashes of cerrnin bnnds of vimin interbedded with Coal hleasure rocks in North Staffordshire and
North \Vales contain notable quanritics of some of the less common elements, c$efly vanadium, chromium, titanium, and nickel. " Cauldron vitmhs from the Durham coalfield and Whitby jet show the same phenomenon, which appears to bc fairly general for carbonaceous material of a black, brittle, lustrous type occurring in isolated bands or lumps in rocks. It is considered that current theories of the origin of rare clcmcnts-in coals cannot account satisfactorify for concentrations such as arc now reported. In addition, small but detemimblc quantities of copper, boron, lead, germanium and strontium haw been found in certain coal scams; these occurrences were in some cascs mced to the prcscncc of distinct mincral species, such as copper pyrites and galeno.
